Based in Montgomery, Alabama Knox Kershaw Inc. has a long history in the railroad industry with over 90 years experience creating innovative solutions in the fields of track construction and maintenance in the U.S. and international markets.

The History of Knox Kershaw Inc.

1924

The company was started by Royce Kershaw Sr. as the Royce Kershaw Company, specializing in railroad contracting and railroad bridge construction.

1940

During World War II, Royce Kershaw Sr. develops the first Ballast Regulator and cribbing machine as a solution to the labor shortage caused by the war.

1946

As demand increases for innovation in the railroad industry, the company’s focus shifts from contracting to manufacturing and Mr. Kershaw starts Kershaw Manufacturing Company, Inc. while continuing to operate Royce Kershaw Company as a contracting business.

1956

The Royce Kershaw Company celebrated a milestone in company history, declaring that it had built, reconditioned, or removed over four thousand miles of track throughout the United States.

1983

Knox Kershaw takes over Royce Kershaw Company and changes the name to Knox Kershaw Inc, operating first as a contractor and later developing the business into a manufacturer and remanufacturer of MOW equipment.

2016

Knox Kershaw Inc. remains a family owned company committed to building sophisticated equipment to provide track maintenance solutions for Class I’s, Shortlines, and contractors in the United States and abroad.

Today, Knox Kershaw Inc. is in the business of manufacturing and remanufacturing railway track maintenance machines and spare parts for both domestic and international customers all over the world.

The Knox Kershaw Product Line showcases a diverse range of equipment to suit the needs of customers large and small including ballast regulators in multiple sizes and gauges, snow fighters, brushcutters, bridge and tie cranes, cribber adzers, tie handlers, yard cleaners, material handlers, and more. Equipment is designed to be functional, comfortable, and efficient with an emphasis on safety and ease of maintenance.


KKI specializes in remanufacturing Knox Kershaw and other manufacturer’s maintenance equipment. Whether it is remanufacturing a machine to its original specifications or upgrading it with modern, more productive components, the company’s experience with many different makes and models of track maintenance equipment will save the customer money while furnishing a stronger, safer, more efficient and reliable product. KKI backs all remanufactured machines with a 90 day conditional “New Machine Warranty”.


Knox Kershaw’s Parts and Service Department is at the heart KKI’s committment to customer satisfaction. Our experienced staff, coupled with an extensive warehouse and in house fabrication department help ensure the fastest possible delivery of all parts, minimizing customer downtime. Our service department offers free technical support for the life of the machine. Service technicians are on site for all new and remanufactured machine start ups. KKI’s Service Department also offers on site training for other brands of MOW equipment.


Throughout the early 2000’s the majority of the company’s international sales were made in Canada and Mexico, but over the last 5 years KKI has expanded its reach to markets in South East Asia, Australia, South America, Eastern Europe and Northern Africa, leading the company to be honored with the Alabama Governor’s Trade Excellence Award in 2015.


The company is not only a leader in the railroad maintenance equipment industry, but also a pillar of the local community, supporting causes that improve the city of Montgomery and provide jobs to over 100 citizens of Alabama. Knox Kershaw Inc. was recognized for its important role in the state when the company received the award of Alabama Manufacturer of the Year in 2008 by the Business Council of Alabama.
